Mother elk hide their babies in vegetation at this time of year and may act aggressively without warning to protect their calves.
Elk may look gentle, but they can injure or kill you and/or your dog. They may attack without warning, especially during their calving season in Spring (May-June) and in the Fall (September-October) during the mating season.
- Give wildlife space for your safety and theirs. Stay on designated trails and respect trail closures or restrictions for your safety. Always maintain a safe distance of at least 30 metres.
- Do not touch or move baby elk. Calves will spend much of their time alone in their early days and will appear lifeless in order to avoid detection by predators. Their mother is not far away and may react aggressively.
- Keep your pets on a leash. An off-leash dog may provoke an elk to become aggressive as they may view the dog as a predator (i.e. a wolf or coyote)
- Always carry bear spray and be prepared to use it.
