A Pathway to a Resilient, Zero-Emission Future

We are excited to announce the adoption of Canmore's Climate Emergency Action Plan, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainability.

Climate change is already affecting our mountain community, increasing the risk of hazards such as fire, flood, and drought. In the years to come, Canmore will be getting warmer and wetter, with wilder weather. The combination of warmer weather and less predictable precipitation will have impacts on the snowpack and glaciers in the mountains around Canmore, with effects on flooding, ecosystem health, and freshwater supply.

We need to work together to strengthen communities, ecosystems, and economy to reduce vulnerability to these climate impacts by limiting our greenhouse gas emissions to reduce our impact on the climate, mitigating potential impacts, and adapting to a changing environment.

Our bold strategy outlines key actions to reduce our community's greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change. Developed with input from over 300 residents through surveys, workshops, and public meetings, the plan includes initiatives such as enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, expanding renewable energy, improving emergency preparedness, and promoting sustainable transportation.

This project was funded in part by the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Climate Resilience Capacity Building Program.
