As a thank you to our community for efforts to divert food waste away from the landfill, residents are invited to have some of the finished product – compost!
To manage traffic during this SIY (shovel-it-yourself) event, space is limited, and you need to sign up for a 15-minute timeslot.

Pick Up Location
Pick up your compost at the back parking lot of the Canmore Recreation Centre, near the entrance to the Golf Course and Curling Club.
What You Need to Know
- Bring your own shovel and containers.
- Leave compost for others: take no more than 100 L of compost.
- To ensure there is a fair opportunity for all residents to pick up compost, households may only pick up compost once during the 2024 Compost Giveaway.
The intent of this event is to share the finished product of our community’s efforts to divert food waste and to provide as many residents as possible the experience of using compost. The Community Compost Giveaway isn't intended to supply all of your soil amendment needs. If you require additional compost, please visit a local landscaping and gardening business.
What to Expect at Your Pick Up
- Staff will not be available to help you shovel, so we recommend asking a friend, family member or a neighbour for assistance if you need help.
- We advise using multiple, smaller containers. Once filled with heavy compost, larger containers can be difficult to lift into vehicles.
- What does 100 L of compost look like?
- Five 20 litre (five gallon) buckets (approximate size 12" x 15")
- Two 50 litre plastic tubs filled with compost (approximate size is 24" x 16" x 12")
