Elk Mating (Rutting) Season is Here

Date posted:
Always give elk space.
Always give elk space.

Elk are wild animals that can react unpredictably. Elk may look gentle, but they can injure or kill you and/or your pets. They may attack without warning, especially during their calving season in Spring (May-June) and in the Fall (September-October) during the mating season.

  • Give wildlife space for your safety and theirs. Stay on designated trails and respect trail closures or restrictions for your safety. Always maintain a safe distance of at least 30 metres.
  • Keep your pets on a leash. An off-leash dog may provoke an elk to become aggressive as they may view the dog as a predator (i.e. a wolf or coyote)
  • Always carry bear spray and be prepared to use it.
  • Report people approaching wildlife or elk acting aggressively. Call 403.591.7755
