Housing in Industrial Districts
After hearing from the public, Council decided to delay second and third reading on amendments to both the Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw to November 5. The amendments are meant to discourage Employee Housing in Industrial Districts, keeping future use for intended industrial purpose. The amendments propose allowing for continued housing opportunities, with regulations and limits in the southern business and transitional industrial districts. Teepee Town Road Right of Way Pilot Project
There are a few areas in the community where the road right-of-way (ROW) held by the Town is wider than required. There is as a potential opportunity to close and sell excess ROW to adjacent property owners in exchange for either Vital Homes units, or financial compensation that could be directed to Canmore Community Housing (CCH). Today, Council approved an exception to the Land Transactions Policy, for the purposes of trying this as a pilot with a property in Teepee Town. The developer plans to build a multi-unit development on the site, with a focus on smaller, entry-level units. The funds generated would be transferred to Canmore Community Housing for future housing.
As part of the decision first reading was given to a road closure bylaw, which begins the process of creation of a legal parcel. Read more here: Bylaws Pending Approval: Town of Canmore
Reducing GHG's - Hauling of Solid Waste
Today, Council signed a new multiyear contract with the Town of Banff for hauling of municipal solid waste to landfill. One big change is that our waste from the Bow Valley will now be hauled to a landfill in Calgary, it was previously hauled to a landfill near Camrose. With this change Canmore will reduce GHG’s related to hauling and disposal by 60%. This equals an annual reduction of 1,200 tonnes of GHG’s.
Council also:
