Elector Eligibility

You are eligible to vote in Canmore in the 2025 municipal election if:

  • you are at least 18 years old,
  • you are a Canadian citizen,
  • you live in Alberta and your place of residence is in Canmore on election day (October 20, 2025).

The permanent electors register maintained by Elections Alberta will be provided to municipalities to use in the 2025 election.

You can check to see if you are already registered, register for the first time, or update your registration information any time at https://www.voterlink.ab.ca/.

Any eligible person is permitted to vote if

  • your name is on the permanent electors register and
  • you produce one piece of photo ID issued by a local, provincial, or federal Canadian government or agency of the government.

If you are not on the permanent electors register and are eligible to vote, you are permitted to vote if

  • you sign a statement that you are eligible to vote, and
  • you validate your identity and address by producing one of the following:
    • one piece of photo ID issued by a local, provincial, or federal Canadian government or agency of the government or
    • one piece of ID from this list:
      • Bank/credit card statement or personal cheque;
      • Correspondence issued by a school, college or university;
      • Government cheque or cheque stub;
      • Income/property tax assessment notice;
      • Insurance policy or coverage card;
      • Letter from a public curator, public guardian or public trustee;
      • Pension Plan statement of benefits, contributions or participation;
      • Residential lease or mortgage statement;
      • Statement of government benefits: e.g. Employment insurance, old-age security, social assistance, disability support, or child tax benefit;
      • Utility bill: e.g. Telephone, public utilities commission, television, electricity, gas or water;
      • Vehicle ownership, registration or insurance certificate; or
      • A letter or form (attestation) confirming that the person lives at the stated address. The letter can be signed by any of the following:
        • authorized representative of a commercial property management company;
        • authorized representative of a post-secondary institution; or
        • authorized representative of a long-term care or supportive living facility.

If you have more than one residence in Alberta, you may only vote in the municipality you have designated as your residence for the purpose of voting. Election day is the same across Alberta regardless of when advance votes are held or mail-in ballots are completed.

Your residence for the purpose of voting means the place where you live, sleep, and intend to return to after an absence. If you live, sleep and return to two places, you must choose one location in which to vote using the following criteria in order of priority:

  1. The address shown on your driver’s license or identification card issued by the Government of Alberta;
  2. The address to which your income tax correspondence is addressed and delivered;
  3. The address to which your mail is addressed and delivered.

If an eligible elector is not on the permanent electors register and does not possess the required identification, that person may be vouched for by an elector whose name appears on the permanent electors register. The person doing the vouching has to sign a statement that

  • they know the person they are vouching for,
  • they know the person resides at the address they have provided, and
  • the elector themself has not been vouched for.

An elector cannot vouch for more than one person unless it is for two or more people who live at the same address. Anyone appointed as an election scrutineer may not vouch for anyone.
