We recognize that social media is a vital way to reach Canmore's residents and visitors. It takes a considerable amount of time and resources moderating our Facebook posts. As well, it takes a mental toll on our team who must navigate the complaints and disrespect to keep the conversation healthy for others. Currently, we are unable to moderate or respond to comments, so we have turned off commenting on Facebook. We commit to providing (where possible) an email address or contact form in case readers have a specific question or need clarification about any information in a post.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I report an issue with a road or a service through Facebook?

The fastest way to get your issue addressed is to report it directly to the department that can help you. There may be clarification or questions they need and you are the best person to provide it to them. Reports of issues with roads, power, or infrastructure, should be made through our Contact Us page, and not through social media.

Doesn’t this code of conduct stifle conversation?

There are many opportunities for conversation online including community groups. Town of Canmore may participate in those online community group discussions to provide clarity, correct misinformation, and to interact with Canmore residents. CURRENTLY SUSPENDED: The communications department will read comments and participate in discussions when appropriate. We ask that your comments be relevant and respectful.

Why can’t the public express opinions and criticisms on the Town of Canmore Facebook page?

We welcome questions, requests for clarification, and engagement with other commenters in a respectful manner. There’s a fine line between opinions and potential to perpetuate misinformation and spread false information. What some people consider “expressing their opinion” might feel to others like harassment, bullying, name-calling, insults, intimidation, or retaliation - especially when we see it as intentionally trying to instigate conflict, hostility, or arguments. As well, some people’s opinions have unproven or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations. Recognizing there is enough negativity on social media already, we aim to foster a safe and open community across social media platforms and protect social media users from inappropriate and harmful discourse on our Facebook page. There are many other Facebook groups where free expression of opinions are welcome without any moderation; however, it isn’t welcome on our Facebook page anymore.

Why have I been blocked from the Town of Canmore Facebook page?

There are clear criteria above to create shared expectations between Facebook users and the Town of Canmore. Outlining what is acceptable for others to post as comments on our page and what we won’t tolerate, provides consistent and transparent information with clear processes on what happens when this code of conduct isn’t followed.
