Commercial Solar Incentive Program Application Form

Our community values our mountain environment, and investing in solar energy can be a great way to reduce emissions while lowering energy costs. However, upfront costs can be a barrier. That’s why we offer an annual incentive to help offset the cost of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for Canmore residents and businesses.

How the Commercial and Multi-family Program Works

  • The commercial incentive is based on the system size. Incentive amounts are $750/kW to a maximum of $20,000.
  • The incentive applies to both new construction and existing buildings.
  • For multi-family buildings, the system must serve the common areas and/or all units.
  • The incentive is not retroactive for existing systems.
  • Installation and electrical inspection must be completed by Dec. 15, 2025.
  • Successful applicants will be selected by lottery, with funding secured based on proposed size, and will be contacted directly with next steps.

Apply by 4 p.m. MST on March 31, 2025.

Terms and Conditions

1. The incentive is $750 per kW installed to a maximum of $20,000. The incentive amount will be calculated once the system as been installed.

2. The incentive is not retroactive for existing systems.

3. For multi-family buildings, the solar array needs to provide a collective benefit to the residents in the building.

a. Individual owners of condo units are not eligible for this program. Condo owners can apply to the Residential Solar Incentive Program for arrays only servicing individually metered units.

b. Multi-family applicants will need to confirm the areas of the building that will be powered by the system (e.g., corridors and shared spaces). Applications should be submitted by the condo board or building owner.

4. For existing buildings, the system must be installed between April 8 and Dec. 15, 2025.

5. For buildings under construction, ensure that the system can be installed by the end of 2025. Buildings at the early stages of design and construction are requested to apply to the incentive program in future years.

6. If applications exceed the available budget, larger arrays may be prioritized. There will also be a two-stage lottery process to select recipients:

a. Stage 1: a lottery for applicants that have already submitted their microgeneration application to Fortis and completed a structural assessment (if applicable), as well as any in-construction buildings that will be completed by the end of 2025.

b. Stage 2: if there is remaining budget, a second lottery for all other applicants.

7. All applicants will be notified of the lottery results on April 8.

8. The incentive will be provided by electronic funds transfer (EFT) or mailed cheque after the solar system has been installed and the following documents are received by the Town. They need to be emailed to sustainability@canmore.ca by Dec. 15, 2025:

a. A final paid invoice for the installation;
b copy of the electrical permit;
c. the Microgeneration Agreement with Fortis; and
d. copy of a void cheque (if you would like to receive payment by EFT)

9. You can visit Solar Alberta for find a list of installers/contractors serving Canmore and guidance on how to choose a solar provider. Solar systems funded through the Bow Valley Green Energy Co-operative may be eligible if timelines align.

10. All solar projects must meet building and electrical safety code requirements. All electrical systems must be CSA or ULC approved for installation in Canada. Electrical permits are required.

11. Refer to the Town of Canmore’s website for details on building and development permit requirements.
