Residential Solar Incentive Application Form

Our community values our mountain environment, and investing in solar energy can be a great way to reduce emissions while lowering energy costs. However, upfront costs can be a barrier. That’s why we offer an annual incentive to help offset the cost of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

How the Residential Solar Incentive Program Works

  • The residential incentive is $1,250, regardless of the size of the solar PV system
  • We are offering 20 incentives of $1,250 towards the installation of a solar photo voltaic rooftop array for Canmore homeowners.
  • The incentive is for residential homes (single family, duplexes, tri- and four-plexes, individual townhouses, etc.).
  • The proposed array must have a minimum of 3 kW.
  • The incentive is not retroactive for existing systems.
  • You can combine this incentive with the Clean Energy Improvement Program.
  • If applications exceed available funding, recipients will be selected by lottery. Successful applicants will be contacted directly with next steps.

Apply by 4 p.m. MST on March 31, 2025.

Terms and Conditions

1. The incentive is $1,250, regardless of the size of the solar photovoltaic system (must be a minimum of 3 kW).

2. The system must be installed between April 8 and Dec. 15, 2025. The incentive is not retroactive for existing systems.

3. 20 incentives are available. If there are more applicants than available budget, recipients will be selected by a random lottery process. All applicants will be notified of the lottery results on April 8.

4. If applying for your individual unit in a multi-family building, you will be required to provide confirmation that your condo board or building owner has approved the installation.

5. The incentive will be provided by electronic funds transfer (EFT) or mailed cheque after the solar system has been installed and the following documents are received by the Town. They need to be emailed to sustainability@canmore.ca by Dec. 15, 2025:

a. A final paid invoice for the installation;
b. a copy of the electrical permit;
c. the Microgeneration Agreement with Fortis; and
d. a void cheque (if you would like to receive payment by EFT).

6. If the system isn’t installed by Dec. 15, you will forfeit the incentive. If you are financing through The Town of Canmore’s Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP), plan your timelines accordingly. CEIP requires an EnerGuide evaluation and can have long lead times.

7. If you have been selected to receive a solar incentive and are financing the solar installation through CEIP, the rebate will be applied to the CEIP financing instead of being paid directly to you.

8. You can visit Solar Alberta to find a list of installers/contractors serving Canmore and guidance on how to choose a solar provider.

9. All solar projects must meet building and electrical safety code requirements. All electrical systems must be CSA or ULC approved for installation in Canada.

10. Electrical permits are required.

11. Building and development permits are not required if the system is installed according to specific guidelines. Refer to the Town of Canmore’s Planning Department for details.

Please print your name to confirm that you have read and understood the Terms and Conditions above.
